My coloring interpretation for the absolutly fantastic cover done by Casey Coller.
I couldn't resist giving a shot at it; this was his first pro work to IDW and not to mention this is a homage to one of my favorite covers ever from Batman's "The Killing Joke" (I strongly recommend). Believe me when I say Casey went through a lot to bring us this work and I admired a lot his answering capability despite the tough moments he was living in the week he was assigned to draw it; his sister unfortunately passed away (Ryall's post here [link]).

Go to stock photo site ... Pick up "cars" close up images .. metal textures ...
Aply it over with matte paint tecniques .. in photoshop.. And the again after it use overlayering of the painting to those tectures aplied and matted over your image ....
You will see a huge improvment in your work .. You know all about specularity reflectionand subsurfacing refraction ... And also needs some dirt and ambient oclusion there ...
So you can play with those values ... Digitaly 2d just ... Also use radiosity .. to myltiply your exposure ... and blend colors all over the image..
Of course i can talk with you this kind of concepts ... cause you know them tecnicaly ...
"then you ask" ok this is just a paint ... Why those tecnical issues on "rendering" come across here ?...
Well we want to be emulating 3d ... if we want to be "reaaly good artworkers" ... And that doesnt mind "this days" if its a comic book or a even manga cover you are doing ...
The qualities of you knowing those "quind of " more realistic actions that aply to everything in the pisical worls , and who knowing hpow to achieve computer generated ...
That study.. Makes you also emulate "those" rendering proprieties ... but in 2d and overlayering ...
That we call matte painting ....
Well we would say that just for ink and paint whow theres alot trouble and work in ...
But double and triplify and amplify to realistic aspects your image ... And then after doing ( the most dificult ) it you can degrade it - untill the ilustrational side of it ...
Also if i was you i would learn not just ho wto matte paint with textures... But i would use vectors artwork below the inking .. to achieve the most correct "modeling" of out the image ... then after use texture matization and paintmatting .. then use that "painted difuse" solution you got there .. to use it as the color and ilustrational values ...
.. ok you are into speed paint kinda of moods ... Retro artwork from the 80's ... Ok but you can evolute from that point ....
and reaaly "use everything you know till now" and you have been learning all your live ...
Into each new image you do it ... just a painting or not ....
That is to be real artistical ... When we give all of ourselfs .. mind and efforts ... not just our time and fun into it ....

And i would say yes exactly ... Expend as much time as if you would do the modeling of it of all the scene in pure 3d .. with global ambient oclusion with radiosity with surface scaterings with specular , difuse texture painting color painting all values mix toguether but all in 2d ... Cause that is the real way to work very well a artwork ...
A ok !.. you are crazy ... But you see not so much the steps are completly the same what you got there you can see here [link] and well you can do that ... So why not from "that" reach this here as the final output of it [link]
Its like .. effort gurl many many hours .. Weeks if of hours of work ....
Not something you put one hour or two ... But something that you put "your live" in it ...
in every pieçe of artwork you do ...

first off I've never seen something this intriguingly funny and well-executed. I'm in love with this piece.
I just read Andrea Coller's essay online, and this piece of art is a great way to capture her, almost like a photograph.
